Title: Géométrie Algébrique en Liberté XVI
Date: April 21 - 25, 2008
Site: CES Felipe II, Aranjuez near Madrid, Spain.

Topic: GAeL is a meeting for young algebraic geometers. The meeting, planned for about 40 people, provides an ideal opportunity for direct contact with established mathematicians (senior participants) in an informal atmosphere. More importantly, GAeL gives young researchers the opportunity to talk about their own research with their peers from across Europe. The senior participants this year will be Jean-Pierre Demailly, Daniel Huybrechts, Angelo Vistoli. For more information about their talks, you can consult our webpage. However, the emphasis is on talks by young participants, which will take up much of the time and cover a wide variety of topics in algebraic geometry. The talks are meant to be introductory and not too technical.

Title: Current Geometry, the IX Edition of the International Conference on problems and trends of contemporary geometry.
Date: June 24 - 26, 2008
Site: Hotel Oriente, Via Luigi Serio 10, 80069 Vico Equense (Naples), Italy.

Topic: The power of synthesis of Geometry, which led in the past to the formulation of "grand unification theories", has got an essential role nowadays, especially because of the growing fragmentation of knowledge due to scientific progress. In order to avoid too a big dispersion, geometers need a constant dialogue. Therefore, a stable experience of personal meetings, apart from telematic interchanges, cannot be renounced. Current Geometry was born to allow a periodic update about actual progresses in Geometry (and its applications) on the international scene.

Title: XI Edition of the Italian Diffiety School
Date: July 17 - August 01, 2008
Site: Santo Stefano del Sole (Avellino), Italy

Topic: The aim of this permanent School is to introduce undergraduate and Ph.D students in Mathematics and Physics, as well as post-doctoral researchers, in a recently emerged area of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics: Secondary Calculus. A Diffiety is a new geometrical object that properly formalizes the concept of the solution space of a given system of nonlinear PDEs, much as an algebraic variety does with respect to solutions of a given system of algebraic equations. Secondary Calculus is a natural diffiety analogue of the standard Calculus on smooth manifolds, and as such leads to a very rich general theory of nonlinear PDEs. Moreover, it appears to be the unique natural language for quantum physics, just as the standard Calculus is the natural language for classical physics.
Organized by: Diffiety Institute (Russia), Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici (Italy), Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica, Università degli Studi di Salerno (Italy), Municipality of Santo Stefan del Sole (Italy), Comunità Montana Serinese-Solofrana (Italy), Ente Morale S. Aim of the School: The School is mainly aimed to Phd students and young researchers in Algebraic Geometry, introducing the participants to research, beginning from a basic level with a view towards the applications and to the most recent results. A tentative program is as follows. Motivation: why stacks are needed. Basic example: moduli of curves of genus g. The 2-category of groupoids, schemes as functors, categories fibered in groupoids, pseudofunctors. The stack condition. Representable morphisms, definition of algebraic stack (in the sense of Deligne-Mumford). Quotient stacks, stacks associated to groupoids. The 2-category of stacks; open, closed substacks; topological space associated to a stack. Properties of stacks and of their morphisms; valuative criteria for separatedness and properness. Inertia stack. (Quasi)coherent sheaves on a stack, cohomology of sheaves. Main worked out examples: moduli of stable pointed curves, moduli of stable sheaves, weighted projective stacks and toric DM stacks. Infinitesimal study of moduli stacks and deformation theory. A short introduction to Artin stacks will also be provided. The school will be followed by a workshop. Confirmed lecturers in the workshop are F. Catanese (Bayreuth), G. Farkas (Berlin), E. Sernesi (Roma Tre), A. Verra (Roma Tre), A. Vistoli (SNS Pisa).

With the goal of applications to different areas such as Mathematics, Mechanics, Engineering, Economy, Finances, Chemistry, Biology, just to name a few, models and methods have been developed, with apparent different languages but that are susceptible of an unified analytical and numerical treatment. Taking into account the most recent developments in this area of Mathematics, we wish to address problems associated with Partial Differential Equations, Optimal Control, Finite or Infinite Dimension Optimization, Shape Optimization in Structural Engineering, together with the associated computational aspects.
