Abstract: This paper describes the contents and the technical basis of the public EULER World Wide Web server.

Table of Contents

1. Introduction

The public WWW Homepage of the EULER project is located at http://www.emis.de/projects/EULER/ .

This paper briefly describes aims and scope of that server, outlines its contents, describes the technical basis of the public EULER WWW server (incl. its about 30 worldwide distributed mirror sites), and gives a history of major updates and changes done during the project.

2. Aim and Scope of the Public EULER WWW Server

The installation and maintenance of the public EULER WWW server is part of Task 5.1 of the project's workplan (Information Dissemination, Deliverable D5.1.2). The Task 5.1 description of the workplan states: "Relevant reports of the project will be made publicly available on the World Wide Web."

Besides this purely technical point it is quite natural and also standard practice in other projects to use the project's WWW server for more general public relations of the project.

This paper describes the public  EULER WWW server, which is to be distinguished from the project-internal WWW server. The latter is used for project management purposes and only accessible for project participants via username/password procedures.

4. Distribution and Access through EMIS Server System

EMIS is the European Mathematical Information Service of the European Mathematical Society (EMS). Scientific coordination of EMIS is done by EULER partner Bernd Wegner (TUB). The master server's technicalities and administration are handled by FIZ Karlsruhe (Zentralblatt MATH). More than 30 worldwide distributed replica servers mirror the contents of EMIS in most European countries and on all continents (except Antarctica). Thus, EMIS is a widely accessible and very well accepted distribution medium for mathematics-related information. Making the public EULER WWW pages part of the EMIS servers secures a very broad visibility of EULER thoughout the mathematics user community.

The contents of the public EULER WWW server is prepared by FIZ Karlsruhe / Zentralblatt MATH (with assistance from other EULER project participants) and regularly uploaded to the EMIS distribution server. From there the contents is distributed automatically to the worldwide EMIS mirror system.
